Some male pundits are wondering why wondering why women aren’t organizing. Some women are wondering if male pundits are paying attention.
In Virginia we have Women’s Strike Force, dedicated to “recruit(ing) and support(ing) candidates opposing any elected official who supported the “personhood” or mandatory ultrasound legislation in the 2012 Virginia General Assembly. Their goal is to “defeat the members of the Virginia legislature who supported these dreadful bills.” They received nationwide media attention during Bob “Transvaginal” McDonnell’s struggle to avoid a complete political disaster caused by the overreach of the Republican-controlled legislature.
But beyond Virginia there are at least two national groups forming:
Unite Against the War on Women was launched on Facebook February 19, 2012 with a call to march and rally on April 28, 2012 in every state to say “Enough is Enough.” Over 20,00 people have joined the movement on Facebook an they are transitioning to a stand-alone website. Unite Women’s primary mission is to develop its membership in each state to identify our common concerns, to develop action programs to effectively address these concerns, in partnership with other organizations that share our mission and goals, and to reach out to the particularly hard-to-reach about legislative and policy decisions that impact them and their families.
The goal of We Are Woman is to draw national and worldwide attention to the facts. 1,100 pieces of legislation, women being called “sluts” and “prostitutes,” birth control mandates, politicians like Rand Paul and Rick Santorum actively working to overthrow Roe V Wade, personhood laws, fetal pain laws. The facts are clear, the evidence is front and center. This is in fact a war on women, and women will fight back. We Are Woman is committed to a non violent protest and march on Washington, DC in September 2012.
