Deeds & Signer Stand for 1st Amendment Rights @ Liberty U

Virginians continue to resist Popes, Kings, Mullahs, Grand Poohbahs and Elmer Gantrys

In response to a bone-headed ill-advised move by, Liberty University, to ban a student club because they were... brace yourself... Democrats, I am pleased to see that Creigh Deeds has responded directly, making it clear where he stands in the endless fight for religious freedom in Virginia. He could have taken a safe, election year pass on confronting this attack on our Constitution. But the Creigh Deeds we know out here in mountains and valleys of Virginia was born fighting, just like Sen. Jim Webb.

We as a nation, and as the Great Commonwealth of Virginia, are a rough and tumble lot... a bubbling, melting pot of incredibly diverse beliefs and creeds. We have descended from a long line of ancestors who have resisted domination by kings, popes, dictators, demagogues, charlatans, and religious zealots, who try to enforce their own narrow view of the one true way of life - a State Church. Virginians Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington resisted an English Church State over 200 years ago, and Creigh Deeds speaks for most rational, fair-minded Americans, in 2009, when he says,

“Virginia is the home of free speech. Restricting free speech and discouraging students from participating in the political process are not what our colleges and universities should be about. I call on Liberty University to reverse their decision and reinstate the Liberty University Democratic Party Club.

For the knuckleheads out there that failed their Virginia high school SOL's test section on the United States Constitution... here's a little reminder, the 1st Amendment, often associated with Free Speech includes the novel concept of Freedom of Assembly.

Freedom of assembly, sometimes used interchangeably with the freedom of association, is the individual right to come together with other individuals and collectively express, promote, pursue and defend common interests.

see First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States

In other words if the cowardly College Republicans at Liberty University don't want to associate with College Democrats... that's cool, and fully protected by their 1st Amendment rights. But it also includes the right for College Democrats to freely associate with each other, and Heavens to Betsy they might even attend a College Republican meeting and engage in a civil dialogue with their classmates. Now wouldn't that be something to see... conservative and liberal Christians... talking to each others as brothers and sisters in Christ!

Rant over... time to get back on the tractor and get some farm work done!

Update 1:00am, 5/23 - Mike Signer joins the fray! VAYD's ramp up support of LU Dems.

STATEMENT FROM MIKE SIGNER ON LIBERTY UNIVERSITY'S DECISION TO REVOKE RECOGNITION OF THE CAMPUS DEMOCRATIC PARTY

"The decision of the Liberty University administration to revoke the recognition of the students' Democratic organization is deeply troubling. It is even more problematic that the school has decided to continue to recognize the campus Republicans."

"I'm proud to announce that my campaign has been in close contact with Brian Diaz, the president of the campus Democrats organization and has offered the full resources of my campaign and my staff to support Brian and his fellow students as they work to form a coalition with other area colleges to found the Lynchburg Young Democrats. Together, we can fight this clear violation of the American tradition of the freedom of speech and political organization."
